ATP - Nadal vs Wawrinka in Miami: Wow!
Just finished watching a great tennis match between Rafa Nadal (Spain) and Wawrinka (Swiss). Rafa won in the best match I've seen so far in the Sony Ericsson ATP Tournament in Miami. Final scores Nadal 7-6, 7-6 with Wawrinka pushing all the way. Wawrinka not one tiny bit afraid of the lefty's left-hand serve. Ooh rah for Wawrinka. Wawrinka had Nadal on the ropes so many times and then I really started watching the match and what I saw was this. The Swiss are extraordinary tennis pros. Wawrinka should be higher in the rankings than he is and Federer - the greatest tennis player who ever played - will always be No. 1 to me. Just watch the man. He's like Gregory Hines, Tiger Woods, or Mikhail Baryshnikov. Masters. They don't have to "muscle through" because they are gifted. The gift is in their blood. They just have to learn the techniques to add to their bag of natural skills. They are like Beethovens or Bachs. But I understand that Nadal is right-handed and learned to play left-handed. A king on the court, no doubt. Able to muscle through and use brains plus skill as he did tonight, no doubt; but I noticed something else. The Swiss are "gentlemen". They are or seem to be too polite - at least on the court. Maybe it comes from the neutrality of their nation - who knows. When Nadal had to pull victory out of almost certain defeat, he reached down not to style or technique but to guts and controlled emotions. Wawrinka just didn't seem hungry enough or was too well-disciplined to let up on being a gentleman. Not saying the Spaniards aren't gentlemen, just noticed a toughness come to the surface. So to Roger Federer whom I want to see win his 16th, take your extraordinary talent and get that slam! And as an off-topic aside, if you feel like it, put some of your favorite matches on DVD and sell them through your foundation. I'd buy them; watching you execute a match of tennis is watching a master in motion. And to you and your dear companion, Mirka Vavrinec, - congratulations on the impending birth of your first baby! A new Vavrinec-Federer champion...a new baby Federer. Whoo hoo! You and Mirka will have more fun, the greatest fun in the world. God bless... To Nadal and Wawrinka - thank you for a great tennis match, really great tennis.
