Pope Benedict XVI - a prayer for courage
Today, I picked up Time Magazine - first time in a great while. On the cover is a picture of Pope Benedict XVI. The only letters larger than the title, Time, are the letters depicting Islam. The article, however, was good. One person's opinion here but I believe Pope Benedict XVI has a mission; I believe he has heard the words of his mission loud and clear. His mission seems to be to bring to the forefront the recognition and acknowledgement by Muslim clerical leaders of the violence that seems embedded within the teachings of Islam. Eventually, this brave Pope may even give his life for that mission. One issue that he does not shirk is the issue of "dhimmitude", the second-class status of non-Muslims living in nations dominated by Islam. He may well speak to the issue that Muslims in non-Muslim nations are allowed to build mosques, build schools, etc. The Pope may well ask for equally fair treatment of non-Muslims, many of whom are not allowed to build houses of worship, wear crosses, and in places such as Saudi Arabia, are even forbidden to have Bibles. As one small voice, I wish the Pope well on his journey. He is the Vicar of Christ and I sense that he is a warrior for truth. Godspeed, Pope Benedict the XVI.

I know, Steve, but there is no one else right now to face the thugs and the bullies.

Being of Irish descent, and having been educated by Jesuits, I amm well aware of the sins of the Catholic Church, most notably the sins of the Papacy. I am also aware of the sins of the dissenters from Scotland. Cromwell and his followers are still remembered with hatred in the Emerald Isle. OTOH I do recall that Ireland has the distinction of having been the only Catholic nation to have ever had a Crusade called out against it.
That being said, the Catholic and Byzantine churches are the only Christian sects that have combatted Islam. I am refering to their doing so as political entities. Admittedly, the Catholic Church is the only religion I am aware of that is currently considered as a seperate political entity, especially as the Vatican is considered to be sovereign soil.
I'm happy that the Pope has the guts to bring up the hole freedom of religion thing. However, I wish he hadn't knuckled under to those neanderthals a couple of months ago when they got annoyed about that quote from one of the Byzantine Emperors.
Personally, I kind of wish that they had elected another Urban, yes I know that the 1st Crusade was initiated mostly to bring the Eastern Church back into the fold. However, it is quite likely that if the Pope were to resurrect the Knightly Orders the Catholic Church would gain converts.
BTW, as far as the Papacy's stand on the Holocaust, please remember just where the Vatican is located. Also please recall that "power comes from the muzzle of a gun" as Mao used to say. The Catholic Church has a long history which includes numerous instances of a Pope being coerced due to force of arms.
Right now, the Pope is the only one I see willing to risk everything to confront the outrages of Islam. His work needs to be done.
Somewhere along the line, we must have someone speak the truth that Islam is three-pronged: religious garb, political entity; and military arm (call the jihadists whatever one wants they are military arm) as are Iran, Syria, et al in the Middle East.
Read what the religion of peace folks are doing in Indonesia. Migraine has hit - so may or may not post today.
I want to thank you for your comments. You let me know that I am not alone - as Fox Mulder says on The X Files. (Smile, it's the pain talking.)
