Webb the novelist and Senatorial candidate
I was just visiting at the Drudge Report a few minutes ago and read the post citing some of the writings of Mr. Jim Webb (Democrat) who is running for the Senate in Virginia.
Being a writer myself, I know that we get carried away sometimes and we tend to get graphic, especially when an agent or publisher wants us to sell books. Sex sells. Good, bad, or indifferent; sex sells. Frankly, I found the quotations gratuitous; both those that dealt with men imposing sex on minors (disgusting as well as gratuitous) and those that put women in states of subjugation. Simply stated, writers can include sex scenes into their novels without making it sex with minors.
As I recall, the most recent quotation is from a novel published in 2001. The earlier ones can somewhat be forgiven in view of his youth at the time and his writing success. That said, people don't ususally jump into Senatorial races over-night so I would suggest that the 2001 writings more closely align with present positions: views that support homosexual "marriages"; and women not competent to serve in military leadership roles.
Who was the Supreme Court Justice who said, I can't define pornography for you but I can tell you when I see it?
None of us are angels, some writers least of all. I would just be concerned about things like the NAMBLA push for the lowering of the age of consent and how Mr. Webb would feel about that, given some of the scenarios. We know he supports homosexual "marriage". How would he feel about lowering the age of consent to 10, to 4 as some numbskulls in California suggest? Would Mr. Webb be soft on those ideas and amenable to them? I don't know. I suspect he will tell us before November 7th.

A perfect measuring stick for these creeps.
Artists are teachers in a way, and are thus held to a higher standard than others (Biblically speaking), for they instruct. Fiction is the back door to truth, and what you let out of the gate, what you append your name to, reflects your views of what is acceptable. If you bow under to editorial pressure (and I've been on both sides of the editing process) to add smut to your work, then we know you by your choices. If you write in trash to "spice up" a work, then we know you by your choices. If you append your name to filth and cover yourself with the rags of dissembling, again, we know you by your choices. Webb made the case that it was morally acceptable to write that kind of language, to portray women and children in such a way, and to furthermore, profit from it. I have nothing but contempt for such people -- nothing but contempt!

ReplyDeleteAbout who I'll be voting for in VA - certainly NOT the dems candidate. Candidly, I have written some rather torrid scenes but never ones that were so hideously vile and never ones that dealt with child molestation such as the one mr. webb wrote. Disgusting. The one quoted from 2001 is so horrible. Makes me sick. Hope the guy is enjoying his royalties 'cause he sure ain't gettin' no money from me.
I like George Allen. We aren't buddies or anything like that but I do know him and I know he is a good man. If he ever turns out not to be a good man, I will be very surprised. Very surprised.
Leave the naughty bits out. Not necessary and you can always allude to them without being graphic. I believe the rule is if it doesn't move the story along, leave it out. Also keep in mind that your career may be inspiring to other lads and lassies - focus on the good, tough, character-building, patriotic stuff. I'm sure there is plenty of that. If you were a super spook, even better. If you spent nights in the boondocks of some outpost, even better.
